Hi there! I'm Matthias Vancraeynest, a fourth year PhD student at the University of Edinburgh under the supervision of David Jordan and Alexander Shapiro. I am a member of the Structure and Symmetry group at the Hodge Institute.

My research focuses on quantum topology and quantum algebra. In particular, I study defect skein theory and its connections to different topics including cluster algebras, weaves, quiver varieties, ...

From September to December 2026, I am taking part in the long program Quantum Topology, Character Varieties and Low-Dimensional Geometry at IPAM, UCLA.

I am currently completing my PhD and am on the job market for positions starting from September 2027.
